The Guyana Pink Toe Tarantula (Avicularia avicularia) is a beautiful arboreal (tree-dwelling) tarantula native to tropical forests in northern South America. Unlike terrestrial species such as curly hairs, pink toes spend most of their time off the ground.

Enclosure

 Sub-Adult:

  • 12” × 12” × 18” enclosure or larger

Setup

  • Plenty of vertical climbing space
  • Large cork bark tube positioned vertically
  • Artificial or live plants for cover
  • Cross ventilation is extremely important
  • Small water dish attached low in the enclosure

Substrate

  • 2–3 inches of:
    • Coconut fiber
    • ReptiSoil
    • Organic topsoil mix

The substrate mainly helps maintain humidity; this species rarely uses it.

Temperature

  • 72–82°F (22–28°C)
  • Ideal range: 75–80°F

Humidity

  • 65–80%
  • Keep a water dish available at all times
  • Allow the enclosure to dry slightly between mistings
  • Good ventilation is more important than constantly wet conditions
